The maker

Hand-painted in Egypt's village of Tunis.

KILIIM brings together the handmade ceramics of Tunis, a village set between Lake Qaroun and the desert dunes of Egypt's Fayoum Oasis. The tradition took root in the 1980s, when Swiss artist Evelyn Porret opened a pottery school there; her students became the village's master potters, shaping a distinctly Tunisian style of primitive motifs drawn from local flora and fauna.

Each piece is formed from clay gathered along the Nile banks of Aswan, then hand-glazed and hand-painted, so no two are alike. Lead-free and food-safe, they are made to be used and displayed in equal measure, carrying the small variations that are the signature of the hands that made them.

Yes, the ceramics are lead-free and food-safe. We recommend hand-washing to preserve the hand-painted glaze and avoiding sudden temperature changes.
