Palm Grove Ceramic Large Plate
Handcrafted in the village of Tunis — a picturesque settlement nestled between Lake Qaroun and the desert dunes of the Fayoum Oasis — the Palm Grove Ceramic Large Plate is a generous canvas for one of Egypt's most enduring artistic motifs.
In the 1980s, Swiss ceramic artist Evelyn Porret founded a pottery school in Tunis, introducing the village children to the craft of clay. Her graduates became the village's master potters, shaping a distinctly Tunisian aesthetic: hand-formed pieces adorned with primitive motifs drawn from the local flora and fauna. Each piece is shaped from clay sourced along the Nile banks of Aswan, then hand-glazed and painted by hand — no two are identical.
The Palm Grove Ceramic Large Plate features a sweeping hand-painted palm frond design in rich greens and earthy tones, inspired by the lush oases that punctuate Egypt's desert interior. At nearly 12 inches across, it works beautifully as a serving centrepiece for mezze, cheese, or fruit — or simply displayed on a plate stand or shelf where its hand-painted surface can be appreciated up close. Slight variations in colour and form are not imperfections — they are evidence of the hands that made it.
